Bananas are the most sought after fruit in the world but like all celebrities, it is now facing some downtime.
The main reason for this downfall is the extensive use of monoculture.The wide scale cultivation of the same kind of crop.
The fruit you had recently would probably be a Cavendish banana.An artificially engineered variety commercialised in the 19th century.This one has no natural seeds and can be cloned easily.So the banana maintains the same quality from Costa Rica to Philippines and your backyard.
Disaster can strike when these clones get exposed to natural diseases.According to plant researcher Luis Pocasangre It is very easy to maintain plantations of a single clone but the problem lies in passing diseases.This in reality can spread like wildfire.

It doesn’t stop with killing bananas but makes it impossible to grow it ever again on that land.The first victim being Philippines which is the second largest producer of the fruit.Now it’s spreading all over Asia.
Monoculture is a disaster in itself leading to deforestation and conversion of forest lands to factories.Thus like everything manmade, it does effect the biodiversity.
