Apple has debuted the Vision Pro Headset at $3,500, hardly a lucrative price point. No matter how good the technology and robust it’s functionality, the product would not be able to reach it’s potential without the required sales. Apple might have decided on the price after the idea that the technology is so nascent and expensive that, priced any lower, it would undermine the $15 Billion plus investment in developing the product. It’ll be nine months before Vision Pro goes on sale.
Apple is already at work on a cheaper version of the headset that might help sell more units. The name Vision Pro would imply that a cheaper Apple Vision product is in the works. One that would have simpler headband design, lesser sensors and lower quality screens. Combine this with a refined production process and economies of scale, Apple could release a budget headset.
But as for now, Apple has to hope that the high price doesn’t drive people away from headsets and that there would be enough consumers to take up the cheaper version into 2024-26.
